WE HAVE A CONTRACT!

On Thursday, May 16th, after 16 months of negotiations, our members voted by a 97.8% landslide to approve our first union contract.

Adjunct faculty and lecturers at SCU organized for five years to form a union, which they finally won in 2022. Non-tenure track faculty members at SCU teach most of the university’s courses yet struggle with undependable employment and an ever-increasing cost of living, making it unsustainable to continue in their current positions. The new contract increases wages and expands career advancement opportunities.

"This first contract is a major step forward for all my union colleagues,” said Sandy Piderit, a senior lecturer at the Leavey School of Business at SCU. “I'm grateful to the bargaining team for securing agreements to increase job security by moving more people onto multiyear positions and raising minimum salaries."

In addition to much-needed wage increases and expanded opportunities for professional development, new contract highlights include updated and improved title changes and expanded health benefits. Union members anticipate that these additions will offer greater stability for lecturers, reduce turnover, and increase consistency for students.

“Building our union has been such an exciting process so far, and having our first contract ratified is a huge step forward for stability for faculty and students at SCU,” added Natalie Linnell, a senior lecturer in SCU's Mathematics and Computer Science Department.

This union victory and first contract mark a pivotal moment within a broader national movement of adjunct faculty organizing that began over a decade ago and has continued to grow. As universities have increasingly relied on employing professors on a temporary, part-time basis, paying them per course or credit as a cost-effective and more "flexible" staffing solution for the majority of undergraduate courses, adjunct faculty have increasingly turned to unionization to counteract the negative impacts of this trend. The growing reliance on a transient faculty workforce, many of whom supplement their income by teaching at multiple institutions or taking on additional jobs, leads to a lack of consistency and continuity for students and academic departments.

29th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session the Administration made counter-proposals on Compensation and Positions, Titles, & Promotion.

One of our top bargaining priorities has been job security for all, including AYALs, which is why we have been fighting to increase the conversion of AYALs to RTLs. In this session, the administration agreed to convert 25 AYALs in the first 2 years of the contract and we countered with 35. The difference of 10 matters a great deal because it is a matter of our colleagues’ job security and ability to participate more fully in SCU.

The Union's most recent Compensation proposal:

-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,500 for AYALs; and $3,000 for RTLs and Senior Lecturers

-Raises:  8% in Sept. 2024; 6% in Sept. 2025

Our proposal also includes a compensation floor, and a $5,000 hiring bonus for new AYALs.

The Administration's most recent Compensation proposal:

-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,500 for AYALs; and $3,000 for RTLs and Senior Lecturers

This proposal also includes a compensation floor:

72,000 for 7 courses

93,000 for 9 courses

Only three topics of bargaining remain, with 27 tentative agreements reached. Our next bargaining session will be 4/23.

26th Bargaining Update

25th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session we made counter-proposals on Compensation and Promotion & Course Assignment.Compensation is the highest-priority

issue for our bargaining unit. We are all dealing with an extraordinary cost of living and the effects of inflation. Many of us have salaries

that classify us as low-income by agencies from local, state, and national governments.  This is why we are fighting hard on this issue.

The other high-priority item we are still working on is job security.

The Union's most recent Compensation proposal:

-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,500 for AYALs; and $3,000 for RTLs and Senior Lecturers

-Raises:  9% in Sept. 2024; 6% in Sept. 2025; 5% in Sept. 2026

Our proposal also includes a compensation floor.

The biggest change in our proposal is the addition of a third year to the contract.

The Administration's most recent Compensation proposal:

-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,500 for AYALs; and $3,000 for RTLs and Senior Lecturers

-Raises:  5.25% in Sept. 2024; 5.25% in Sept. 2025

Best,

The Union Bargaining Team

24th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session the Administration made a counter-proposal on Compensation. We also had an in-depth discussion of Promotion & Course Assignment.

Both current Compensation proposals are structured as follows: one-time bonuses upon ratification, with a raise in Sept. 2024 and another raise in Sept. 2025.

The Union's proposal:
-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $3,000 for benefits-eligible NTTs
-Raises: 12% in Sept. 2024; 7% in Sept. 2025
Our proposal also includes a compensation floor.

-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,500 for AYALs; and $3,000 for RTLs and Senior Lecturers
-Raises: 5.25% in Sept. 2024; 5.25% in Sept. 2025
This is an increase of $500 in bonuses for AYALs and RTLs, and a .25% increase in the Sept. 2024 raise from their previous proposal.

We are preparing a counter-proposal on Compensation for our next bargaining session, on February 15.

Best,
The Union Bargaining Team
(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie Linnell)

counter-proposals on Housing and Promotion & Course Assignment. We also presented a counter-proposal on Compensation.

Sept. 2024 and another raise in Sept. 2025.

The Union's proposal:

-Raises: 12% in Sept. 2024; 7% in Sept. 2025

The Administration's proposal:
-Bonuses: $1,500 for QALs; $2,000 for AYALs; $2,500 for RTLs; and $3,000 for Senior Lecturers
-Raises: 5% in Sept. 2024; 5.25% in Sept. 2025

Best,
The Union Bargaining Team
(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie Linnell)

22nd Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session the Administration gave us a counter-proposal on Compensation. Although the Administration
showed some movement, we will continue to advocate for wages that reflect our contribution to the University and the cost
of living in the area. Next week, we will present a counter-proposal on Compensation.

This week, we presented the President with a petition, where more than 500 people called on the President to take this
compensation negotiation seriously. We urge you all to continue to make your voices heard to show the Administration
that this is one of our top bargaining priorities.

We are meeting again next Thursday, 2/1. We are requesting counter-proposals from the Administration on Titles,
Promotion & Course Assignment; Performance Evaluations; and Housing.

Best,
The Union Bargaining Team
(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie Linnell)

21st Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session, we reached a Tentative Agreement on 3 articles: Benefits, Position Posting,
and Timelines for Contracts & Cancellation Payments. We made a counter-proposal on Housing, and
each party made a counter-proposal on Professional Development.

These Tentative Agreements represent significant gains. We have protected our existing benefits and assured QALs and AYALs a first-round interview for new RTL positions. We have also assured that all AYALs will receive updates by Mar. 31 as to whether the University knows their hiring status for Fall.

We expressed our displeasure with the Administration's most recent Compensation proposal, which is
worse for NTT than their original proposal. You have an opportunity to stand with your fellow faculty by
joining tomorrow's action: On Saturday, January 13, Santa Clara plays Saint Mary's, and as everyone
arrives at the Leavey Center, from 2-4, we will hand fliers to supporters that will direct them to a
petition to ask the Administration not to drop the ball on the contract.

Sign the petition here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8LR37FH

Our next bargaining session will be on January 26.

Best,
The Union Bargaining Team
(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie
Linnell)

20th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session we made counter-proposals on Benefits, and Housing.  The Administration made counter-proposals on Timeline for Contracts & Cancellation Payments, and Housing.

Our next bargaining sessions will be January 12.

Best,

The Union Bargaining Team

(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie Linnell)

19th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session the administration made a counter-proposal on Compensation. By our calculations, this proposal was worse than the Administration's previous proposal.  We are disappointed that we remain very far apart.

We reached tentative agreement on No Strike/No Lockout.

Our next bargaining sessions will be December 13.

Best,

The Union Bargaining Team

(Brian Buckley, Patricia Cameron-Loyd, Deirdre Frontczak, Seiko Fuji, Maggie Levantovskaya, Natalie Linnell)

18th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session we made a counter-proposal to the Administration on Titles, Promotions, and Course Assignments.

Our next bargaining sessions will be December 8 and 13.

The Administration has initiated a new article: "No Strike/No Lockout." This kind of article is typical,
and ensures that the union does not strike for the life of the contract (though can strike if necessary at
contract expiration) and that the University will not lock out faculty. Today we also presented a counter
proposal on this article.

We are still awaiting a counter-proposal on compensation; the Administration expects to present a counter
in our next bargaining session.

Best,
The Union Bargaining Team

17th Bargaining Update

Dear campus community,

In today's bargaining session we made counter-proposals to the Administration on Compensation,
and Timeline for Teaching Contracts and Cancellation Payments.

Our next bargaining session will be November 28.

We are still far apart on compensation. While the Administration's proposal represents progress,
we believe that a university as well-resourced as SCU can commit to more significant gains for NTT faculty.
Our proposal, however, reflects the great contribution of NTT faculty to the university’s success.
But we will only be able to achieve this if our union is active and strong.

and Support for Underrepresented Students. At this point we have 20 tentative agreements,
with 10 outstanding proposals.

We received counter-proposals from the Administration on Compensation;
Positions, Titles, and Promotion; and Timeline for Teaching Contracts
and Cancellation Payments.

Our next bargaining sessions will be November 9 and 28.

Dear campus community,

and we received a counter-proposal from the Administration on Positions, Titles, and Promotion,
which we discussed extensively. Our next bargaining session will be October 17.

We did not receive a counterproposal on compensation today. We hope to receive it before our
next bargaining session.

13th Bargaining Update

Dear Campus Community,

Now that we have made all of our opening proposals to the administration, we are beginning to see more counter-proposals from the administration, leading to lively discussion and tentative agreements on a number of issues.

September 1, 2023: This session yielded three tentative agreements: academic freedom, leaves of absence, and service & professional development. We made substantial progress on titles & promotion schedules, as well as presenting a counter-proposal on contract timelines & cancellation payments.

Our next bargaining sessions will be September 21 & 28

12th Bargaining Update

Dear Campus Community,

Now that we have made all of our opening proposals to the administration, we are beginning to see more counter-proposals from the administration, leading to lively discussion and tentative agreements on a number of issues.

Today we reached tentative agreements on access to and interviews for open tenure-track positions, unemployment insurance, and student loan forgiveness. We also presented counter-proposals to the administration on discipline and discharge and leaves of absence.

This is in addition to tentative agreements reached in our July 20 bargaining session on: reporting equity data, grievance and arbitration, and office space and support.  We also reached a tentative agreement on the non-monetary portion of the faculty development proposal.

Our next bargaining session will be September 1.
