Dolores Huerta is an icon in organized labor and civil rights circles. On May 6, 2022, she spoke to a group of SCU students, faculty, and community members, and came out strongly in favor of the efforts to organize a union at Santa Clara University:
"Workers are entitled are to have their own organization so they can be informed, so they can have representation, not only on the job but in the cities and in the legislature and in Congress. We know that teachers are probably one of the most important elements of our society because [they] are the ones that are erasing the ignorance that exists, the ignorance that keeps us divided. Teachers are so important and need to have their union, regardless of what level of teaching that they do. Labor unions are absolutely critical to maintain our democracy and so people can have a better life. Sí se puede.”
